I dream about being able to afford 22 megapixel medium format backs. I think that it would be great to be able to capture that much detail with one click of the shutter. Heck, I’d love to be able to afford a Canon 1Ds. However, for most amateur photographers that type of hardware is out of reach. But, with a little bit of practice, you can get some of the same eye popping detail using much more modest equipment. The answer is to take multiple exposures and stitch them together using software that costs as much as a somewhat nice dinner.

From time to time, the technology of digital cameras can introduce unwanted artifacts. One type of artifact that you can fix with Photoshop is an excessive amount of colour noise or colour blooming. You’ll most likely see this problem when shooting with a high ISO setting or with a low-end digital camera (cell phone cameras). The added colour artifacting doesn’t represent the true colour of an image. I call this phenomenon “The Colour Gremlins”.

There is one thing that has bugged me about CR and that's the fact that its default configuration is such that the Exposure, Shadows, Brightness and Contrast settings default to Auto.

In nature when doing landscape work that includes sky, especially early or late in the day, the contrast range encountered often exceeds that which film or imaging chips can handle. It's therefore necessary to find a way to reduce the contrast range to something that the camera can handle so that the highlights don't burn out and the shadow areas don't turn inky black.
