Kino Flo's new Tegra 4Bank redefines the evolution of light by combining the Academy award-winning features of the 4 ft. 4Bank portable system with onboard control features of the Diva-Lite 401. No other light features onboard dimming, onboard switching, remote hand-held dimming, and Universal input voltage (100VAC to 240VAC). Proprietary solid state electronics operate the lamps on high output, flicker free, and dead quiet.

The fixture produces as much light as a 1,000W tungsten softlight, using only one tenth the amount of power. The built-in barndoors with newly designed hinges, honeycomb louver and centre mount system make the lightweight Tegra ideal for hand-held shots, rigging in tight locations or mounting on a light stand. The fixture takes 2900K, 3200K and 5500K True Match® lamps that display a full range of high colour rendering soft light.

Tegra 4Bank Universal

The Tegra 4Bank is a broad, soft light source ideally suited for television and film quick shooting styles. The Tegra 4Bank produces a soft, diffused, beauty light without the use of a bounce card. The onboard dimming ballast is high output and offers individual lamp switching without any color shift. Dimming is also available with the use of a hand-held remote dimmer. The louver and built-in barndoors provide additional light control. With its universal power supply, the versatile Tegra 4Bank can be used anywhere in the world.

The Tegra 4Bank includes a centre mount honeycomb louver, reflector and built-in barndoors with newly designed hinges. Its all-in-one lightweight design is cool to the touch and can be mounted to a stand or hung from a grid.

The Tegra 4Bank operates on 4ft T12 True Match® lamps (CRI95) available in tungsten and daylight balanced lamps, (KF29, KF32 and KF55). Kino Flo visual effects lamps in 420nm blue for blue screen and 525nm green for green screen application are also available.

Tegra 4Bank Fixture

The Tegra 4Bank Fixture houses the lamps and includes a built-in Reflector and Harness, removable Honeycomb Louver and centre mount with a baby receiver lollipop.

The built-in harness is colour coded. The same colour-code must match at each end of the lamp for proper operation.

Light Control

The Tegra 4Bank Fixture includes a 90° Honeycomb Louver (LVR-G490). It is attached to the fixture with Velcro fasteners.  The Kino Flo specially designed metal foil Honeycomb Louver controls and focuses the light which narrows the light spread with minimal light loss.  A 60° Louver (LVR-G460) is also available as an accessory.

Flozier

The Tegra 4Bank produces a broad soft light. The built-in barndoors can open to broaden the light. For additional softness, a Flozier may be used. The Flozier is cloth material that slips over the front of the fixture and provides a large area of white diffusion. The resulting larger area of diffusion further softens the light. This is especially useful when dealing with reflective subject matter as a means of diffusing the reflection of the lamps in the fixture. The harshness of lamp reflections in glasses is easily avoided. The Flozier is attached by stretching the two elastic cords around each end of the fixture.

Note: The louver should be removed before applying the Flozier.

Mounting

The Centre Mount includes a ball and socket design with a lock down handle. It allows unrestricted fixture orientation and keeps the fixture lightweight. The fixture can operate in either a horizontal or vertical position. It is easily rigged on the end of a grip arm to allow positioning off camera as a key or back light for interviews.

At the other end of the Centre Mount is a baby receiver (16mm) that can go directly onto a light stand.

Example of the Tegra 4Bank rigged into a mafer clamp with baby pin. Note: The eyelet next to the mount is used as a safety point.

Electronic Ballast

The onboard ballast is designed to provide flicker-free operation. The built-in universal power supply has an auto-sensing voltage regulator so it can be plugged into voltage ranging from 100VAC-240VAC.

The Tegra 4Bank features a built-in dimmer control. Lamps can dim from 100% down to 5%. However, it is not recommended that the dimmer be used to adjust exposure levels within one f-stop. If dimmed beyond one f-stop, the color may drift towards the magenta spectrum.

To adjust for lower light levels, the Tegra is equipped with four individual lamp switches. The combination of dimming and lamp switching gives you maximum light control without colour shift.

The Tegra comes with a 15ft power cord with an in-line power switch.

Clamshell Travel Case

The clamshell travel case (KAS-T4-C) is recommended for travel in small vehicles and production trucks. It has room for one fixture and a 6-Lamp carry case (KAS-C46).

6-Lamp Carry Case

The 6-Lamp carry case (KAS-C46) fits 6 spare lamps allowing an easy change out of colour temperature. It fits inside the clamshell case (KAS-T4-C) and the soft case (BAG-401).

The Lamps

The Tegra 4Bank operates on Kino Flo’s True Match® daylight and tungsten lamps. The 4ft T12 full spectrum tungsten and daylight balanced lamps include KF29, KF32 and KF55. These specially formulated lamps rated at CRI 95 are unique to Kino Flo as they display a broad, colour correct soft light, creating a nearly shadowless display that drops off evenly. They are the only high colour rendering fluorescent lamps made for the professional film and video industry. Visual effects lamps in 420nm blue for blue screen and 525nm green for green screen applications are also available.

Tegra 4Bank Advantages

Energy Efficiency
The Tegra 4Bank is an efficient soft light compared to conventional studio fixtures. The Tegra is about the same light output as a 1K studio soft light. It draws only 2.8 amps at 120VAC compared to 8 amps on a studio fixture. This is especially important when shooting on location and power availability is an issue. The low power draw is also an advantage when operating on battery inverter power sources.

All-in-one Design
With its built-in ballast design, the Tegra 4Bank includes onboard dimming and onboard lamp control. The Tegra 4Bank also comes with a 15ft extension cable with an in-line power switch. The Tegra incorporates built-in barndoors with newly designed hinges. The all-in-one lightweight Tegra makes it ideal for fast and easy set ups.

Long Lamp Life
Lamp life of a fluorescent for the television and motion picture industry is determined more by its lumen maintenance than by its actual burn time. All fluorescent lamps display a lumen depreciation curve. This means that over time the light output gradually drops and lowers in colour temperature. A lamp may be rated at 10,000 to 20,000 hour range.

True Match® Colour Correct Lamps
True Match® lamps are formulated to correspond to the spectral distribution curves of film and video cameras as well as look correct to the eye. They are designed to match the colours from quartz units or daylight sources such as HMIs. This gives the camera operator the option of mixing quartz hard light sources with fluorescent soft sources. Most lighting designers want the ability to use both qualities of light to enhance the set.

Architectural lamps are designed to optimize government-mandated standards for lumens per watt efficiencies (energy savings targets). In order to achieve these standards, the lamps contain high levels of light in the green spectrum, which our eyes don’t perceive as inaccurate. Film and television cameras do record this added green. For example, green renders Caucasian skin tone as grayish and unattractive. The architectural lamps do not match with other studio lamps. They render colours inaccurately and make correction in post almost impossible.

In 1995 Kino Flo received a technical achievement award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the development of the first colour correct lamps for film. Kino Flo continues to be a leader in their field introducing new developments and constantly improving the efficiencies and formulations of its lamp technology.

Heat Management Design
The physical heat of the lamp or the build up of heat within the fixture will directly influence the colour temperature and lumen performance and lamp life. The Tegra 4Bank fixture design addresses these requirements:

  • The reflector is vented in the back to increase airflow.
  • The ends are open to minimize heat build-up.
  • The lamps are properly spaced apart to maximize light output from the reflector and minimize heat build up.

A well maintained lamp temperature extends the lumen maintenance, colour temperature and life of a lamp. Many manufacturers do not emphasize heat management as a critical design element. They place lamps so close together that they heat each other up and never provide a stable temperature environment. A True Match® lamp in a poorly ventilated fixture will not perform as well as in a Kino Flo fixture. Customers of other manufacturers buy True Match® lamps and wonder why the performance is not as good as in a Kino Flo fixture. The answer is ventilation.

Centre Mount
The Centre Mount is more flexible than a conventional yoke. A yoke limits orientation on two axes, tilt and pan. The ball centre mount design enables the fixture to be oriented at any angle. An optional offset arm with  baby receiver (MTP-B41F) may be used to centre the weight of the fixture on a stand or can be under slung and used as an "up" light.

Cost Savings
Cost savings attributed to fluorescents cover a broad range of concerns:

  • Lower energy costs
  • Less heat so lower air conditioning expenses
  • No gel replacements because of low heat
  • Fewer lamp replacements due to longer lamp life
  • Lamp replacement labour reduced by a factor of 10

Energy Savings Calculations
With the push of reducing fossil fuel consumption, TV studios are looking at cooler, more efficient lighting systems to reduce costs and save energy. One of the most important values is BTU/kWh (British Thermal Units per Kilowatt Hour).

Any light generates a percentage of usable light and the rest in heat. For example, a standard incandescent light bulb converts only 11 percent of its electrical input into visible light, while the rest is dissipated directly as heat. There are energy costs involved in cooling the studio environment.
The measure of BTU/kWh is a means of calculating the thermal loads related to operating lighting. Use the following information to calculate BTU/kWh:

Watts to BTU

  • 1 kWh = 3413 BTU/hr
  • 1 Watt = 3.413 BTU/hr
  • 3.413 = BTU per Watt-hour
