My favourite macro lens is the 105 mm macro. I bought this one for two reasons. I needed a shorter focal length to do copy and I also needed a lens with an aperture ring that I could use on a bellows. This lens covers those needs admirably. Images are crisp with good contrast and colour so it's a great lens in that regard and its reasonably fast. It also provides one to one without an extension tube.
However it relies on the focusing motor in the camera so its focus is rather slow when compared to the later designs like the 105 mm macro. But then I don't use it for subjects that are in motion so to me this is not a handicap. Still, if this is your primary macro lens for moving subjects I'd opt for the 85 mm or the 105 mm one instead. They are as fast and they focus faster and also give you a better working distance.
