If you are a Canon owner like I am, you have to get this lens!! It is fast, excellent build quality, fast focus, sharp image quality and works well with a 2X telextender! Being a profesional photographer that photographs everything from sports and wildlife to portraits; it does it all!
IS or non-IS. That is the question!

Yes, the 70-200mm 2.8L IS is the highest level in this zoom range as far as price is concerned...but do you really need IS?? If you can afford it, then that's a no brainer - get it ASAP!!! If not, consider what the IS is really used for - obtaining a steady shot at lower shutter speeds than normally used for this 200mm lens when handheld. If you are using this lens for fast shots and don't plan to handhold shots for a longer shutter speed (ie. such as dimly lit sports stadiums), then don't get IS. It will not make a difference for fast shots. Then you should purchase the non-IS version and save like 40%. The IS also makes the lens heavier by like 1/2 lb. Difficult to hold for long periods without a tripod anyway so why spend big bucks for IS when all you need is tripod for non-IS version... As with any lens, decide what you want to use it for - and if you can afford it or can deal without it by compensating by another means. ie a tripod.
For those without big budgets, I hope this helps! :-))

Yes its an expensive lens, but the quality shows. I'm glad I bought this... couldnt imagine telephoto shots with such clarity using anything less. Results justify the costs

A Great Zoom

I use this lens photographing large animals in low light situations, but it is a great landscape lens too. It is almost as sharp as a prime, but has the benefit of being a zoom, and FAST! I will admit, the price tag is a little on the high side, and the lens is heavy as a brick, but the picture quality more or less makes up for these things. This one is a keeper.

This is by far the greatest telephoto lens on the planet. If you are in search of the holy grail of lenses, this is pretty much it.

I shoot sports mostly: Hockey, box/field lacrosse & most are indoor shots. Rented this lens from the Camera Store for 1 day on a weekend to try and see if it would make a difference. Bought it Monday. The IS with the 2.8 is a must & the better the camera the better the lens is. Go down and demo. The difference between IS and not... BIG Diff. I'm not rich, but why say "I Wish I had of.." I'm not a professional. But my presentable pics went way up.
