This lens is wonderful. If you have any desire to get in really close on things and capture nuances of detail, colour, shadows and light, go for it. The price 'gulp' is very quickly offset in use.
Oh, one more thing; this lens is big and heavy, far more so than I expected. I love the heft. Hand holding it is not difficult though, of course, as with any photo taking times, using a tripod is the best way to go.
Enjoy.
ps- no, I am not a Nikon salesman!
Amazing Lens

About 80% of my photographic work is macro, mostly insects and fungus. I must have a lens that goes 1:1, is fast, can be relied upon to snap into focus, provides a good working distance, and operates with a Dx (D200) and Fx (D3) sensor. This one fits the bill admirably. As a bonus too it gives me an image stabilizor. Now only about twenty percent of my work is with a tripod, the rest is hand held because of the VR technology. That is really amazing too. I love the M/A capability too, often the autofocus isn't quite perfect so I am able to immediately make a slight focus adjustment before snapping the image. That is really super.
The only problem is that the lens does not have an aperture ring. This means that while I can use automatic extension tubes with it to increase magnification, I can't use a bellows. I work around that by using an older macro lens that does have an aperture ring. Those needs however only cover about 2% of my needs so it's this lens that is my primary lens for all my macro work. It's really an amazing bit of optical engineering that has made me happy for three years now.
