Pleasant surprise

I recently purchased the D5000 with this lens as a kit. I had rented the D90 and the 24-70 the weekend before, so I wasn't sure I would be happy with the lens, but it was in my budget so I went ahead anyway. It has it's flaws, but has turned out much better than I had expected.
Pros: The range is perfect for everyday shooting. The lens is light, as it has a plastic body and plastic mount. It's fairly compact and has a nice feel with the D5000. Some may feel this is a bad thing, but the zoom ring is stiff. It is very smooth so the stiffness doesn't bother me. The zoom ring itself is nice and wide. It also has a manual focus ring, but no focus window. The images are very sharp.
Cons: This lens does suffer from corner shading or vignetting, but it's very subtle. Stopping the lens down to f8 - f11 corrected this for me. The manual focus ring seems to have a very small range. It's a little difficult to fine tune the focus, but most won't be purchasing this for the manual focus.
Overall it's a good starter lens. The focal lenth is great for everyday use, the build quality is decent for a kit lens and I can't complain about the performance for my uses.
