When I first looked to buying a flash I looked at the Vivitar 285's as well as a few Nikon ones to use off camera with my Canon system.
Yet I decided to go the Canon route for the simple facts that there is a HUGE difference in quality, the E-TTL system will work off camera with my ST-E2 if I wish, it can be used on camera and even though the menu can be daunting at first... it soon becomes second hand flipping between the power settings while it is on the light stand.
I do wish Canon would have kept the Master/Slave switch like I have on my first gen 580ex... but all in all... this speedlight rocks and I don't regret not going to a lessor brand and being stuck using it off camera all the time.
