This is a great camera. I got it for Christmas this year and am very pleased with the quality and features. I'll post a secondary update after getting to know the intricacies of this particular model.
Possibly the last camera you'll ever need

It's taken me the better part of a year to figure out how to express my feelings about the D700, and this might be moot considering Nikon will probably unveil it's successor in less than 6 months, but frankly, I think the D700 is the best thing since sliced bread. Unless you ache for video capabilities (I don't), then this just might be the last camera body you buy. I'm serious, it's that good.
I won't go into specifics about it's ISO performance - do a Google search for that and have fun. What I will say is the D700 handles like a pro-level camera should. Impeccably. This is the camera to buy if the D3s is just too expensive for you.
In the past year, I've tweaked the D700's settings to my shooting style so perfectly that there is no other way to describe the joy I get from working with this camera. It truly is an extension of my eye. If there is any fault to be found it's that with so many ways to configure the camera, it can take you time and a little trial and error to really get the D700 to work the way you want it to. The upside is that, in a pinch, selecting "P" mode will guarantee you raw images with great potential. Once you do have the camera set for the way you work, you'll never have to think about exposure accuracy again. The D700 will just go.
When you throw in the fact that this is a full-frame sensor with unheard of excellent ISO performance, and that it's compatible with just about every lens Nikon has made since the 1950s, there is no reason NOT to buy this camera. Wide angle lenses have never had it so good in digital. ISO ranges have never been cleaner. To my mind, there is no better camera to shoot with.
Yes, it's THAT good.
