Enlight Photo Orbis Ring Flash

The orbis™ ring flash uses your existing flash/strobe to create the same beautiful, characteristic ring flash look that has previously only been possible with expensive studio systems.

Ring flash has long been recognised as characteristic of high-end portrait and fashion photography. The preserve of the upper end of the market, studio ring flash systems cast beautiful shadowless light yet are bulky, fragile, unwieldy and costly.

Conceived by a full time professional photographer and developed by top optical designers, the orbis™ ring flash is made from durable ABS plastics, weighs around 500g and is totally portable. The patent-pending ‘light-tunnel’ redirects the light from your flash/strobe transforming it into an incredibly effective ring flash.

A patent-pending 'one-size-fits-most' dock means that the orbis™ works with a huge range of flash/strobes with no need for add-ons.

The orbis™ enables you to take photographs with shadowless quality ring flash light - without the high costs associated with buying or renting a bulky studio ring flash. All you need is a standard flash/strobe unit and an off-camera cord (or other remote triggering method). the orbis™ is handheld so neither impedes your camera system's functionality nor relies on the fragile hotshoe connection. The orbis™ arm™, a simple kit enabling you to fix your orbis™ to your camera, is under development and will be released in 2009.

The orbis™ was designed to give serious photographers an edge; by enabling you to quickly and easily take beautifully lit photographs, and to get the most out of your equipment.

TTL functionality, a great price and all in a ring flash built to last.

Flash/Strobe Compatibility

The orbis(tm) works with most flash/strobes straight out of the box, with no need for any extra parts or conversion add-ons !

The orbis™ has been tested with the Canon 300TL, 420EX, 430EX, 540EZ, 550EX, 580EX I and II, Nikon SB28, SB600, SB800, SB900, Cosmos 360, Vivitar 283, Olympus FL36R, FL50, Sunpak PF30X and 5000, Sony F56, Minolta 5200 and Sigma 500, Metz 48 and Metz 58 and Pentax AF540. If your flash/strobe is similar in size and shape to these, it will almost definitely be compatible with the orbis™. If you're not sure, email us and we can tell you!

The only common flash/strobes that we know of that don't fit the orbis™ are the Vivitar 285, the 285HV and the Metz 45 which are all slightly too large.

Also please note that the orbis™ is designed to work with standard-design SLR hotshoe flashes with a head that can be tilted back to vertical, so it does not work with the Canon 220EX, Nikon SB400 or the older Metz "Hammerhead" series (Metz 60 etc).

Be sure to read the instruction manual before using your orbis™.

Lens Compatibility
The lens tunnel is 85mm wide, so it works with commonly used Canon 16-35, 24-70, 70-200 (IS and non IS), Nikon 16-35, 24-70 and 70-200 (VR and non VR) and more.

All About Sensor Sizes

The sensor size affects many factors in your images and the functions of your camera body. It has a major impact on the quality of your image, how your lens functions, and how it performs in low light conditions.

There are three basic size categories for sensors: Four Thirds, APS, and Full Film Format. As noted in the chart below, the smaller sensors are used in point and shoot cameras while the larger ones are found in DSLR models.

Four Thirds sensors have become a standard for Olympus and Panasonic at a size of 13.5mm by 18mm, while APS sensors are close to that of the original APS film size. Most DSLR cameras fall into the APS size range (14mm by 21mm to 16mm by 24mm), often described as 1.5x, 1.6x, or 2.0x crop factors.

Sensors that are the same size as 35mm film format are also called full-frame sensors. This full frame sensor allows you to use lenses without the complication of focal length magnification factors and produce the highest quality images in DSLR cameras. The sensor size is a true 24mm by 36mm, just like a frame of 35mm film.
