Exmor™ APS HD CMOS sensor for true-to-life color and tonal gradation
The NEX-5 is equipped with a powerful new 14.2-megapixel* Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor, specially tuned to deliver uncompromising still-photo and movie image quality. Equal in surface area and performance to the large, APS-C image sensors used in Sony's acclaimed Alpha system digital SLR cameras, it offers exceptionally rich tonal gradation and true-to-life color. Proprietary Sony processing technologies are also incorporated directly into the sensor, assuring clean, low-noise signal output and ultra high-speed data transfer.
Exmor + BIONZ noise-reduction for enhanced low-light shooting capability
Thanks to the DSLR-class noise-reduction capability of the Exmor CMOS sensor and BIONZ image processing engine, low-light shooting capabilities are outstanding. Both the NEX-5 and the NEX-3 boast an ISO AUTO light sensitivity range of ISO200~1600, and offer user-selectable settings up to ISO12800. So you can enjoy the freedom of shooting without a tripod or flash, and capture more colorful and beautiful images in low light. Settings for long-exposure noise reduction (ON/OFF) and high-ISO noise reduction (Auto/Weak) can be accessed via the Setup menu.
True HD movie recording with interchangeable-lens flexibility
The NEX-5 and NEX-3 are the first Sony interchangeable-lens cameras to offer movie recording - and they do it in style. With a new high-speed, low-noise Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor that's large enough to capture background defocusing effects, and a dedicated new line of ultra quiet E-mount lenses to help keep AF motor noise off your movie soundtrack.* Both cameras support HD movie recording in the convenient MP4 format, which makes it easy to post video clips on blogs or video-sharing websites. And the powerful NEX-5 goes a step further, offering big, beautiful 1920 x 1080 Full HD image quality with the high capacity of the AVCHD recording format.
New control wheel and soft keys for more intuitive operation
These NEX cameras also make the power of interchangeable-lens photography more accessible with an exceptionally easy to-operate new control wheel and two context-sensitive soft keys. Pressing and rotating the control wheel lets you access shooting, drive, and flash modes, as well as exposure compensation and other camera settings. Used in combination with the context-sensitive soft keys, it lets you scroll through menu items and make your selections quickly, with intuitive ease.
iAuto mode convenience, plus Background Defocus Control
In iAuto mode, the NEX-5 automatically applies exposure values and Scene Selection modes that are optimized to suit each scene. What's more, they combine this full-auto convenience with a Background Defocus Control function that lets you enjoy one of the biggest creative advantages of interchangeable lens photography - the ability to defocus the background to make your main subject stand out from the scene. Just press and rotate the control wheel to set the level of background defocusing you want - it's easy and intuitive because you can confirm the level of defocusing on the LCD monitor in real-time.

Shooting tips to help you achieve your goals and boost your skills
In addition to basic Help Guide information, these NEX cameras are also equipped with built-in shooting tips. The tips provide information relevant to the current shooting situation or mode selection and are designed with both beginners and more advanced users in mind. Two types of tip are offered: 1) tips about particular types of subject and scene, and 2) tips on general photographic technique. Since the entire library of shooting tips can also be accessed via the Camera menu and viewed as a single guidebook, it's like having a complete photography tutorial built right into your camera.
A graphical user interface that works the way you expect it to
The main menu features six clearly labeled icons that can be selected simply by rotating and pressing the control wheel. Inside, standard scrolling menus provide quick access to settings for shooting and playback functions, as well as a host of other user preferences and camera settings. The wide-screen format of the LCD monitor also contributes to enhanced menu legibility, so text and icons are always easy to see and select.
A built-in Help Guide - so it's always there when you need it
The Help Guide displays a pop-up window with a brief description of each item or function when selecting modes or scrolling through menu items with the control wheel. It also displays easy-to-understand error messages if you attempt to perform an invalid operation, so you're never left wondering if something unexpected occurs.
Sweep Panorama mode for images of scale and grandeur
The amazing Sweep Panorama mode lets you capture scenic vistas of unprecedented scale and grandeur. Just choose Sweep Panorama from the Shoot Mode menu, and move the camera in a smooth arc as you press the shutter button. The camera will take a series of photos at high speed and seamlessly stitch them together into a single panoramic image of breathtaking beauty, with all the resolution and image detail you need for large-format printing.
High-speed continuous shooting at up to 7 frames per second
Thanks to their powerful Exmor CMOS image sensor and BIONZ image processing engine, these NEX cameras can offer high-speed continuous shooting at up to 7 fps (approx.) in Speed Priority Continuous mode*, and at up to 2.3 fps (approx.) in Continuous Advance mode. In addition, their 10-second self-timer also has a 3-shot continuous shooting setting.
* Focus, exposure, and white balance are locked at the first shot. Continuous speed varies according to shooting conditions and memory cards used.
The rich realism of high dynamic range photography made easy
Perfect for sunsets, backlit cityscapes, and other dramatically illuminated subjects, Auto HDR mode lets you capture images with a super-realistic range of shadow and highlight detail. It achieves this feat by taking three exposures in rapid succession - one to capture a normal exposure, one to capture shadows, and one to capture highlights. The three exposures are then digitally combined into a single stunning image that is saved along with the normal exposure. For greater creative control, you can set the Auto HDR exposure range in six steps, from 1.0EV to 6.0EV, to get the precise effect you want.

A tiltable LCD monitor for easy high and low position shooting
The large Xtra Fine LCD monitor can be angled 80º upward or 45º downward to maximize your shooting freedom. Thanks to this variable angle capability, even high-position and low-position shots can be captured with ease.
Large Xtra Fine LCD monitor with Sony TruBlack technology
The large, 3-inch/7.5-cm* Xtra Fine LCD monitor boasts a 16:9 widescreen display with LED backlighting and stunningly crisp 921,600-dot resolution. Viewing and focusing ease are also enhanced by Sony TruBlack technology, which cuts reflection and glare with a special anti-reflective resin layer, as well as anti-reflective film. So you get vibrant colors and deeper, richer blacks, with high contrast that sharply reveals fine image details. In addition to auto and manual LCD monitor brightness adjustment, there's also a convenient Sunny Weather mode that significantly boosts screen brightness to assure easier viewing in bright light.
An anti-dust system to protect the sensor from contamination
To help protect the image sensor from dust contamination when changing lenses, a dedicated anti-dust system vibrates the optical low-pass filter in front of the image sensor each time power is switched off. It's a fast, convenient aid to help you keep the sensor clean and your photos blemish-free.
Hand-held Twilight mode for clearer imaging in low light
This unique Scene Selection mode takes six shots* at high speed when the shutter is pressed, and then aligns and merges them into a single image, significantly reducing the graininess and noise that can degrade image quality when shooting in extremely low light. Combined with the outstanding low-noise performance of the Exmor CMOS image sensor, it lets you take exceptionally clear, beautiful, nighttime photos without using a tripod or flash.

Intelligent contrast detection for fast, precise auto-focusing
Intelligent contrast-detection AF continuously monitors the scene to assure fast, precise focusing response for both still-photo and movie shooting, with wide area coverage for easy subject tracking. In addition, you also get the convenience of Manual Focus Assist, which automatically enlarges the image on the LCD monitor during Manual focus and Direct Manual Focus (DMF)* operation, as well as Single-shot AF (AF-S) and Continuous AF (AF-C), and a choice of three Auto-focus Area settings: 25-point Multi, user-selectable Flexible Spot, and Center.
