Backing up your data is a smart way to ensure your files are safe at all times no matter what happens to your system. An external storage device is easy to use and is available in many formats from external desktop harddrives, external portable harddrives, CD and DVD discs, USB flash drive, and the most secure Network & RAID Drives. Regularly backing up your data can save your business or personal information as your system can unexpectantly fail due to a power surge, floods, or operating system malfunction. Storage Type	Description	Benefits
CD and DVD	Storage compact discs allow you to record a certain amount of information per disc. CD-Rs are a one time use only disc, you can only record on it once whereas CD-RWs can be re-recorded numerous times. The same holds true for DVDs but there are different formats so check to see what format your DVD drive records to.	Disc storage is inexpensive and easily transportable. Although mostly commonly used for music, video, and image storage, CD and DVD compact discs have small storage capacities in comparison to other storage devices (CDs 700MB, DVDs up to a few gigabytes). They can be damaged, so extra care should be taken in proper storage of this media.
USB Flash Drive	A very small and portable mini harddrive that has a USB port built in to the device. Most commonly holds up to 4GB of storage but can exceed up to 12GB for a card sized style.	A USB flash drive is ultra portable and is usually used as temporary storage and not a permanent one. Many designs include a keychain like design so portability is maximized. Usually used to transfer data from one machine to another, the capacity is relatively small in comparison to harddrives.
External Harddrives	A harddrive that stores information that resides outside of your computer case or laptop. It has its own enclosure and can have a storage capacity equal to or exceeding the internal harddrive of your system. Some are designed specifically to sit on your desk and others are slimmer for portability.	Often includes backup software, large storage capacity, and can be set up to perform backup automatically every day, week or month.
Network and RAID Drives	A heavy duty version of a desktop harddrive, RAID or Redundant Array of Independant Disks, consists of two or more drives that work together to replicate data among them. These are generally used for servers or networks.	The most secure backup system, the multiple drives duplicate the data among themselves ensuring that there is multiple copies of the information sent by the networks computers. If one of the drives fail to write, you can replace it and still have the other drives backing up your data. With some systems, replacing the faulty drive can be done while it is still running and others, the system has to be shut down.
