Overview

Entering the next stage

Astounding functionality meets exquisite image quality in the supremely compact RX100 III. Whenever photo opportunities arise, you can slip it from your pocket to enjoy a captivating 24mm wide-angle perspective, bright telephoto shooting at F2.8, ultra-high sensitivity in dimly lit environments, high-resolution viewfinder framing and exceptionally clear movie recording. Everything you hoped for and more.

Passionately refined image quality

Performance in perfect synergy

Sony meticulously fine-tuned and aligned the lens, image sensor and image processing engine with a precision beyond anything possible in interchangeable lens cameras to achieve stunning image quality surpassing all expectations.

New large-aperture ZEISS® Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm* F1.8-2.8 lens

The newly developed lens expands your range of expression with the enhanced perspective of a wide 24mm focal length, outstanding close-up performance, and bright F2.8 telephoto shooting that not only produces beautiful portraits with stunning background defocusing, but also clearly captures moving subjects in dimly lit settings. Legendary ZEISS® optics ensure superb edge-to-edge depiction, while a ZEISS® T* coating reduces flare and ghosting, aspherical lens elements reduce aberrations as well as lens size, and a built-in 1/8 ND filter expands shooting freedom in bright scenes.

* 35mm equivalent

1.0-type Exmor RTM backilluminated CMOS sensor

Photos and movies are captured with amazing clarity and extremely low noise, thanks to Sony’s high-sensitivity 20.1-megapixel* image sensor, which features a back-illuminated structure that heightens light collection efficiency.

* Approximate effective megapixels

New-generation image processing engine BIONZ XTM

High-speed BIONZ X faithfully reproduces textures and details in real time, as seen by the naked eye, with the help of detail reproduction technology, diffraction reducing technology and improved areaspecific noise reduction.

Breakthrough camera versatility

All-in-one compact precision

Enjoy big-camera functionality in a camera the same size as the renowned RX100. Only Sony has the expertise to pack such streamlined
dimensions with an OLED viewfinder of uncompromising quality, a 180-degree tiltable LCD monitor that’s great for selfies and — believe it or
not — a convenient pop-up flash unit.

Clear, high-resolution retractable OLED viewfinder with ZEISS T * coating

Sony’s high-contrast, high-resolution OLED Tru-Finder provides the uncompromising clarity and framing precision that serious photographers demand. Its advanced eyepiece optics are treated with a ZEISS T* coating for bright, clear viewing from corner to corner, while an eye sensor allows instant shifting between the viewfinder and LCD monitor for stress-free shooting. The 1,440k-dot (approx.) viewfinder fully retracts when not in use.

180-degree tiltable LCD monitor — great for selfies

The clear and bright LCD monitor (3.0- type, 1229k-dot Xtra Fine) tilts up to 180° upward and 45° downward for easy selfies, commemorative shots while traveling, and flexible shooting from various angles.

Intuitive control-ring and button operation

Simply rotate the control ring around the lens to easily adjust camera settings. It turns smoothly and steplessly with clear feedback on the LCD monitor to provide precise, intuitive adjustment usually reserved for interchangeable-lens cameras.

Quick access to functions via Function button

Access up to 12 of your favorite functions quickly with the easily customizable Function button. Just press, choose a function, then
adjust parameters with the control ring.

Powerfully expressive movie creation

Beautifully clear, low-noise movies

BIONZ X dramatically raises the image quality of movies. Through extremely high-speed processing that utilises every pixel from the image sensor at accelerated speed, it applies detail reproduction technology in real time to optimize every detail, as well as improved area-specific noise reduction to significantly reduce noise. The high-bit-rate XAVC S format further contributes to beautiful movie quality with minimal compression noise.

Pro-quality XAVC S format — a first for the RX series
The XAVC S format is provided for serious videographers. Developed based on the professional XAVC format, if offers low compression
for extremely high-quality movie expression even in scenes full of movement.
Notes: Please use an SDXC memory card higher than Class 10 when shooting movies in the XAVC S format. XAVC S format movies can be
played on PCs with PlayMemories Home pre-installed. XAVC S format movies cannot be burned to DVD discs.

High bit rate Full HD movies in XAVC S format
The XAVC S recording format records at an amazingly high 50Mbps bit rate to realise highresolution video recording with minimal compression noise even in scenes full of movement.

120fps*1 shooting at HD resolution*2
120fps recording broadens image expression options by allowing movies to be played back for slow-motion*3 effects. This is useful for checking the form of athletes during high-speed maneuvers and as a creative means of video expression.
*1 100p for PAL.
*2 HD resolution (1280 x 720 pixels).
*3 Slow motion playback is not possible on this model but is possible on a PC installed with PlayMemories Home.

Advanced moviemaking features

The RX100 III further empowers your moviemaking prowess with wide-ranging features including simultaneous clean HDMI output while recording movies, clear digital zooming without perceptible degradation, handheld shooting with minimal camera shake blur, convenient dual video recording, easy connectivity with mobile devices and convenient management of your content on PCs.

Clean HDMI output*
This feature supports uncompressed movie recording on external recording equipment and lets you output uncompressed movies with the shooting info display function off.
* Audio output is not supported via HDMI output.

Clear Image Zoom
Bring faraway subjects close up with Clear Image Zoom, which digitally doubles the maximum magnification of the optical lens without decreasing the pixel count, thanks to Sony's proprietary By Pixel Super Resolution Technology.

Improved Optical SteadyShotTM image stabilisation
Optical SteadyShot image stabilisation lets you enjoy handheld shooting with reduced camera-shake blur. It features Intelligent Active Mode with Sony's advanced frame-analysis technology and 5-axis image stabilisation. Moreover, new advances help stabilise the image in the viewfinder and LCD monitor while the shutter button is halfway pressed.
* Intelligent Active Mode is not compatible with the XAVC S format at 120p/100p, 60p/50p or the AVCHD format at 60p/50p.

Dual Video Recording
Dual Video Recording saves an additional, more lightweight movie in the MP4 format during AVCHD/XAVC S movie recording to simplify the sharing of movies on SNS via Wi-Fi/NFC.

PASM modes for movies
You can manually adjust P/A/S/M modes (Programmed AE, Aperture priority, Shutter-speed priority and Manual exposure) while shooting movies to fine-tune background defocusing and exposure and achieve exactly the look you seek.

Wi-Fi and NFC

Connect to smartphones and tablets with one touch

You can instantly transfer a photo or movie to your AndroidTM smartphone or tablet by simply touching it with the RX100 III — via downloadable PlayMemories Mobile and built-in Wi-Fi and NFCTM (Near Field Communication). Touching your mobile device with the camera can also activate Smart Remote Embedded, which enables remote control of the camera from a mobile device and features a movie recording start/stop function.

* One-touch connectivity requires NFC-compatible Android device installed with a free PlayMemories Mobile app. The camera is otherwise compatible with iPhone, iPad and Mac computers.

Camera apps

PlayMemories Camera AppsTM

The exciting application download service, PlayMemories Camera Apps, lets you add new functions to your camera’s existing feature-set to heighten photographic expression according to your own creative needs. This visionary application download service broadens your photographic horizons by letting you add more functions to the camera — for the ultimate in personalization — with incredible ease. Several applications, including Multiple Exposure (for stills and movies), are currently available and many more are on the way.

* Availability of PMCA (PlayMemories Camera Apps) service and apps varies according to country or region. Requires a valid Sony Entertainment Network account. Some apps require a fee.

Direct Upload
Sharing photos with the world has never been easier. This app uses Wi-Fi to directly upload your images to Facebook, PlayMemories Online or Flickr*.
* Requires installation of downloadable Flickr Add-on.

Time-lapse
Create dramatic time-lapse movies with this innovative app, which records images at intervals and combines them in a movie (Themes: Cloudy Sky, Night Sky, Night Scene, Sunset, Sunrise, Miniature, Standard, Custom).

Portrait Lighting
In the past, lighting for portrait photography required skill and expertise, but this app makes it easy for anyone to recreate portrait lighting effects. You can select from five lighting levels or customize your settings.

Multiple Exposure
Without touching a computer, you can beautifully combine images. Just select a theme, shoot two photos, and let the app handle compositing for stunning results.

Additional Features:

Lock-on AF
Just press the shutter button halfway to activate Lock-on AF. It automatically adjusts the AF target frame size to match the subject size, improve tracking performance and take full advantage of every photo opportunity.
Note: Available when shooting still images in the AF-C mode only.

Eye AF
Even when capturing a subject partially turned away from the camera with a shallow depth of field, the face is sharply focused thanks to extremely accurate Eye AF. A green frame appears over the prioritised eye when focus has been achieved.

MF Assist, Peaking function
These features help you fine-tune the focus as you desire. MF Assist magnifies the area you are focusing on to enable more precise adjustment, while Peaking highlights the sharpest or most in-focus area with your choice of colour to help determine whether further focusing adjustment is required.

More flexible focus area selection
Choose among three concentric Flexible Spot frames for greater focusing versatility and precision than other cameras’ fixed-focus spot frame systems can provide.

Auto Object Framing
This feature analyzes your recorded image and saves a copy that is expertly cropped to produce a professionally balanced composition for portraits, twosubject shots, close-ups and images of moving subjects. Sony’s By Pixel Super Resolution Technology prevents any marked loss of image quality in the cropped image.

Picture Effect
Convert everyday scenes into works of art by applying innovative Picture Effect modes that adjust camera parameters and apply advanced image processing with real-time previews for most effects. You can choose from 13 modes, including Toy Camera and Pop Color.

Creative Style
Bring out the character of your scene with any of 13 Creative Style settings. The camera adjusts the colour and other image parameters while letting you manually fine-tune the contrast, saturation* and sharpness to achieve the look you desire.
* Not available when B/W or Sepia mode is selected.

Step Zoom
This convenient new feature lets you swiftly select any of five commonly used focal lengths (24, 28, 35, 50 or 70mm) by simply turning the control ring with your finger.
Notes: Focal lengths are 35mm equivalent. Step Zoom is inactive by default.

Zebra function
This feature displays stripes on areas of your still image or movie that are brighter than your IRE setting, making it easier to achieve the exposure you desire. It’s especially useful for getting skin tones just right. The level of sensitivity is adjustable.

10 fps continuous shooting
When subjects are moving quickly, you can capture the decisive moment by shooting continuously at 10 frames per second for up to 58 frames*— while maintaining maximum image quality at full 20.1 effective megapixel (approx.) resolution.
* RAW: 23 frames, JPEG ExFine: 45 frames, JPEG Fine: 50 frames, JPEG Standard: 58 frames
Notes: Speed Priority Continuous Shooting mode uses the focus and exposure settings established for the first shot for all subsequent ones. Actual shooting speed may vary depending on shooting environment and memory card.

Digital level gauge
The Dual-axis Digital Level Gauge makes it easier to level the camera and prevent camera roll and pitch. Graphics clearly indicate whether the camera is level in the horizontal and front-back directions.

Motion Shot Video
This powerful feature replays the action in a dramatic sequence of images on the LCD monitor. It’s great for analyzing golf swings, tennis serves and other fast-moving action. You can even adjust the interval between images as desired.
Note: Motion Shot Video playback cannot be recorded.

Beauty Effect
Transform everyday people shots into lovely portraits with Beauty Effect, which lets you tone and smooth skin, dull overly glistening faces, widen eyes and brighten teeth. Effects are adjustable over five levels and can be combined.

Superior Auto and Intelligent Auto
Choose either of these modes to enjoy point-and-shoot convenience. The camera automatically adjusts camera settings according to shooting
conditions to deliver outstanding results. Superior Auto can additionally activate advanced functions that employ compositing to bring out details in dark scenes, etc.
