Solas | Neutral Density

Neutral density filters are important for filmmakers and photographers because they allow you to precisely control the amount of light passing through the lens for greater creative control over exposure. For filmmakers, this means shutter speeds that match your frame-rate while maintaining the depth-of-field you want. For photographers, it means you can use longer exposures or achieve a shallow depth-of-field in bright sunlight.

Key Features:

  • Maintain natural colours of a scene (no colour shift)
  • Great for still and motion video
  • Infrared cut filtration blocks infrared bleed during long exposures
  • 4 layers of Hoya Multi-Coating (HMC)
  • Include thread mounts so filters can be stacked for increased density

The downside to most neutral density filters is unpredictable “colour shift”. This shift is caused by low-quality materials, poor manufacturing, and ignoring the infrared band of the light spectrum. This “High Red” transmission spike results in unpredictable colour shifts that can change drastically as filter density and exposure times increase.

The Hoya SOLAS IRND filters help solve these issues. The result is a filter line that maintains consistent colour from 1-stop to 10-stops. Filmmakers can now switch from density-to-density as the light changes without fear of a colour grading nightmare. Photographers can use a 10-stop filter or even stack filters for 20+ stops and have no colour shifts.

The filter is mounted into a lightweight, precision-milled aluminum frame. It includes front filter threads so you can attach additional filters or a protective lens cap.

The Solas Neutral Density filter is helpful when:

  • You need to maintain exposure control by varying the amount of light entering the camera
  • The dynamic range of light is too much for your camera lens to expose accurately (bright whites and dark shadows)
  • Creating movement in waterfalls, rivers, and waves
  • Creating motion blur of moving vehicles, trains, cars, and people
  • “Panning” effect when subject maintains sharp focus while background is blurred with camera movement
