Overview

K-70

All Weather DSLR
The PENTAX K-70 has a compact body for easy carry-along to any outdoor shooting.

Its outstanding weather-resistant performance and enormous imaging power, combining true-to-life image description and high-sensitivity shooting, make it extremely reliable, even in most demanding shooting conditions.

Whether it is under bright, blue skies, on wild, overcast days, in the gentle rains, or under dark, starry skies, the PENTAX K-70 captures the beauty of grand nature in an astonishingly beautiful image.

The PENTAX K-70: a camera that brings you new experiences, new excitement and new discoveries in beautiful scenery, while helping you to be more masterful in outdoor photography.

Key Features:

  • Dustproof, weather-resistant structure
  • Cold-proof performance
  • Super-high-sensitivity shooting
  • SR (Shake Reduction) mechanism
  • Compact body

Outdoor-friendly design to expand the boundaries of photography in harsh weather and demanding environments

Despite its compact body, the PENTAX K-70 assures outstanding reliability in harsh environmental conditions, thanks to a dustproof, weather-resistant body and solid operation at -10°C. It can be used anytime and anywhere, without worrying about the weather or shooting location.

Super-high-sensitivity photography to capture dramatic scenes of nature in sharp, high-resolution images

Newly developed noise-reduction technology provides super-high-sensitivity shooting at ISO 102400 (standard output sensitivity), capturing beautiful, lively images of nature without a hint of grain, even at higher sensitivity settings. A combination of PENTAX-original SR (Shake Reduction) mechanisms with 4.5-shutter-step compensation and a high-resolution image sensor produces rich gradation and true-to-life texture.

Responsive, high-precision AF system to capture a sharp, crisp image of the subject in a wide range of photographic scenes

By incorporating a hybrid AF system — which harmonizes the advantages of a contrast-detection AF sensor and an image-plane phase-matching AF sensor — the PENTAX K-70 assures responsive, high-accuracy autofocus operation during Live View shooting using the LCD monitor. The optical viewfinder provides a large, clear image field with an approximately 100% field of view, allowing you to keep the subject in sight at all times.

Dustproof, weather-resistant body

A comprehensive imaging system, including lens, to take on challenging scenes

The PENTAX K-70 incorporates 100 sealing parts throughout its body, including the LCD monitor, to prevent the intrusion of water and dust into the interior. By pairing it with a PENTAX AW- or WR-series lens, you have a highly dependable imaging system with superb environment-resistant performance.

* To eliminate the potential causes of breakdown or malfunction, we advise you to wipe rain or water off the PENTAX K-70 completely and as soon as possible to keep it dry.

Outstanding cold-proof performance down to −10°C

Excellent reliability proven in stringent operation tests

Anticipating many users’ needs for photo shooting in extremely cold locations, the PENTAX K-70 was subjected to stringent environmental tests in temperatures as low as -10°C. Its dependable cold-weather performance assures stable, responsive, high-precision operation of mechanisms and circuitry, while minimizing fluctuations in battery voltage, even in freezing locations.

Battery performance may deteriorate as the temperature of the shooting location goes down. When using the PENTAX K-70 in low-temperature locations, we advise users to carry a spare battery and keep it warm by storing it in a pocket.

Compact design

A compact, maneuverable body, handy for outdoor shooting

Featuring a dustproof, weather-resistant body and a vari-angle LCD monitor, the PENTAX K-70 has also been designed to be compact and maneuverable. By pairing it with one of the compact, lightweight PENTAX-DA-series lenses, you can enjoy outdoor photography more easily and intuitively than ever before.

High-precision autofocusing even at −3EV illumination level

Accurate detection of the subject even in dark locations

The PENTAX K-70 comes equipped with a dependable, high-sensitivity AF sensor module with nine cross-type sensors in the middle. It captures the subject with great accuracy, even in poorly illuminated locations — as low as -3EV — where even the human eye has difficulty in detecting the subject.

DR (Dust Removal) mechanism

Easy removal of dust particles from the image sensor

The PENTAX K-70’s image sensor is treated with PENTAX-original SP coating to prevent dust from clinging to the surface. If any dust remains on the surface, the PENTAX-original DR (Dust Removal) mechanism can shake it off using high-speed vibrations, preventing any dust spots from appearing on captured images.

Excellent operability, even with a gloved hand

  • Grip

The newly designed grip assures a firm hold of the camera body, even when wearing gloves.
  • Control buttons and mode dial

Four buttons of the four-way controller are contoured for easy access and unfailing fingertip operation, even with a gloved hand. The mode dial’s height has been optimized for ease of rotation. The PENTAX K-70 has been designed with meticulous attention to every detail to provide optimum comfort and utmost operability.

Top sensitivity of ISO 102400

Super-high-sensitivity photography and remarkable imaging power

The PENTAX K-70 features a new accelerator unit, which has been designed to optimize the newly developed, high-performance noise-processing technology. In combination with the PRIME MII imaging engine, this unit effectively reduces noise to a minimum, even during super-high sensitivity shooting at ISO 102400 (standard output sensitivity). This combination not only improves image quality at more commonly used sensitivities, but also delivers beautifully depicted images at higher sensitivities by minimizing graininess. As the result, it expands the boundaries of low-illumination photography.

AA-filter-free design

APS-C-size CMOS image sensor with 24.24 effective megapixels
High-performance image sensor unit for fine-detailed images

The PENTAX K-70’s AA-filter-free design eliminates the AA (anti-aliasing) filter, which has an adverse effect on the camera’s resolving power. This design optimizes the resolving power of the approximately 24.24 effective megapixels provided by the high-resolution APS-C-size CMOS image sensor, while assuring high-speed readout of rich-gradation, 14-bit image data.

DA 18-135mmF3.5-5.6ED AL[IF] DC WR Lens

In addition to an extended zoom magnification of 7.5x, this lens includes a simple drip-proof construction and an internal lens motor for a smooth autofocus operation.

High-magnification zoom

Attaching this lens to a PENTAX digital SLR camera enables use as a 7.5x high-magnification zoom lens with a focal length equivalent to 27.5mm (wide) to 207mm (telephoto) in 35mm film format. This lens is suitable for a wide range of typical photographic situations, from landscapes, snapshots, and portraits to sports events. It uses an advanced optical design for providing high magnification in a compact, lightweight body and its easy operability and mobility make it suitable as a lens for everyday use.

Simple drip-proof construction

This lens uses a simple drip-proof construction for preventing water from getting inside the lens. Combined with PENTAX digital SLR cameras also using a drip-proof construction enables use in rainy or foggy conditions, or other locations exposed to water for enhanced durability and reliability.

Internal lens motor for smooth autofocus operation

A DC motor for the autofocus (AF) incorporated within the lens enables smooth autofocus operation (Note 1). A non-rotating mechanism is also used for locking the focus ring during autofocus so that the lens is held in the same position as manual focus.

* The compatible models are the K-5, K-r, K-7, K-x, K-m, K20D, K200D, K100D Super, and K10D (firmware version 1.30 or later). If attached to other cameras, focusing is performed using the manual focus.

High delineation performance

The optical system uses one ED (extra-low dispersion) glass and one hybrid aspherical lens (AL) and one glass mold aspherical lens. This system enables correcting of various types of aberration and high delineation performance in a compact body design.

Round iris diaphragm for producing beautiful out-of-focus (bokeh) effect

This lens uses a round diaphragm for reducing the beams of light when shooting point light sources for enabling a more natural out-of-focus (bokeh) effect.

Additional Lens Features:

  • Realizes minimum shooting distance of 0.4 m in the zoom range.
  • Uses "Quick-Shift Focus System" for enabling manual focus operation after focusing by AF without any switching operation.
  • Uses SP (super protect) coating for protecting the lens surface from water and dirt.

HD PENTAX-DA 55-300mm f/4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE Lens
Compact telephoto zoom lens

This zoom lens provides focal lengths between 84.5mm and 460mm (in the 35mm format)* to cover medium- to super-telephoto ranges. Thanks to its upgraded AF performance, it assures quiet, high-speed AF operation in still-image shooting, as well as smooth AF tracking operation during movie recording to minimize operation noise caused by focus and aperture shifts. Its newly designed, high-quality optics provide a minimum focusing distance of 0.95 meters, expanding the range of photographic applications.

With the adoption of a retractable structure, it measures a mere 89 millimeters in length, making it easy to carry around. Coupled with its weather-resistant construction, this zoom lens assures outstanding reliability and durability even in demanding shooting conditions.

Lens Features:

  • Short minimum focusing distance of 0.95m
  • KAF4 is PENTAX’s first K-mount with electromagnetic diaphragm control system for a quiet sound operation during movie recording
  • Rear focus system and PLM (pulse motor), direct drive lead screw system for a High-speed AF
  • Compact telephoto zoom lens thanks to its collapsible structure
  • Weather-resistant construction
  • ED lens elements for brilliant sharpness and saturated colours
  • HD coating to optimize light transmittance and minimize reflection
  • Quick-Shift Focus System to instantly change the AF mode to MF by twisting the focus ring
  • SP (Super Protect) Coating applied to the front surface of the lens to effectively repel water and grease
  • Rounded diaphragm to produce a beautiful bokeh

High-speed AF operation

With the adoption of a rear-focus system, the focusing lens is 93.6 percent lighter* than the previous version. By driving this focusing lens using a pulse motor (PLM), which is directly linked to a lead screw, this zoom lens operates faster — approximately 8.3 times** at its wide-angle end and approximately 1.7 times** at its telephoto end —and quieter than the existing model.* When mounted on the new PENTAX K-70 digital SLR camera body, it assures smoother, faster AF operation with dimly lit subjects, thanks to an improved AF algorithm that exchanges AF data between the camera body and the lens with greater precision. Operability of its power-assisted focus system during manual-focus operation has also been improved. Since its distance ring is designed to accurately detect the angle of rotation and swiftly react to a change of angle, this zoom lens can shift its focusing lens smoothly in response to distance ring operation.

* When compared with the HD PENTAX-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8ED WR.

** When taking a still image in viewfinder shooting, with the camera’s AF mode set to AF-S and for subjects positioned at a distance between 1.5 meters to infinity.

Quiet AF operation and electromagnetic diaphragm control, perfect for movie recording

This is the first K-mount lens to feature an electromagnetic diaphragm control system.* When mounted on the new PENTAX K-70 digital SLR camera body, it assures smooth, high-precision aperture control during movie recording. Thanks to this state-of-the-art system, it shifts the aperture setting automatically and smoothly, even when the brightness level of the subject changes drastically in movie shooting. Coupled with the PLM mechanism, it also assures smooth AF tracking operation and exposure control, while minimizing the intrusion of focus- and aperture-shift noises during movie-recording operation. As the result, it produces more natural, true-to-life movies in locations such as a theater stage or a sunlight-streaked forest where the brightness level fluctuates considerably, and for such active subjects as athletes and animals.

High-quality images, with a minimum focusing distance of 0.95 meters

With focal lengths from 84.5mm to 460mm (in the 35mm format), this telephoto zoom lens provides approximately 5.5-times zoom coverage from medium- to super-telephoto ranges. Its 14-element, 11-group optics include an ED (Extra-low Dispersion) optical element to effectively minimize spherical and chromatic aberrations, while delivering high-resolution, fine-detailed images with rich contrast from the image’s center to its edges and minimal color bleeding at any focal length setting. In addition to the short minimal focusing distance of 0.95 meters, made possible by the rear-focus system, the lens barrel has also been designed to be free of extension during AF operation, making it ideal for a wide variety of applications, such as outdoor, sports and landscape shooting.
