Overview

EF 35mm F1.4L II USM Lens

For brilliant landscapes, portraits and close-up photography, look no further than the EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM. It helps provide a level of clarity and resolving power that can be an ideal complement to the latest generation of Canon’s high-resolution SLRs. With an effective focal length of 35mm on full-frame cameras and 56mm on APS-C cameras, it helps capture beautiful detail with minimal chromatic aberration and color fringing thanks to Canon’s new BR optics element. It also has a fast, 9-blade maximum aperture of f/1.4 for impressive performance in low-light conditions and beautiful, soft backgrounds. And, like other L-series lenses, the EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM has dust and water sealing. Versatile, speedy and elegant, the EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM will delight photographers looking for a bright, sharp and responsive lens for their most important images.

Key Features:

  • L-series wide-angle single focus lens introduces Canon's newly-developed optical element, BR Optics*, which helps produce impressively high quality images by helping to maximize performance and reduce chromatic aberration.
  • Two aspheric lenses and one UD lens help provide a high level of image quality.
  • Improved durability for use in harsh environments helps ensure reliability and dependability.
  • Subwavelength Coating (SWC) helps significantly reduce lens ghosting and flare.
  • Shortest minimum focusing distance in its class (0.28m) and increased maximum magnification (0.21x) help expand the range of expression, especially when capturing close-up subjects.
  • Fluorine coating on front and rear lens surfaces helps reduce smears and fingerprints.
  • High-grade design for optimum operability with a luxurious feel.

An Excellent Lens
I have had my Canon 35mm f1.4L MarkII lens for a few weeks now. This lens is very sharp and clear. Did my usual low light indoor and bright outdoor testing, and the lens performed exceptionally well. The out-of-the-box auto-focus on my lens is so accurate that I did not even bother to use Focal to calibrate it. Only two minor problems: Compared to my Canon 24-70 f2.8L (1st generation), flare control shooting into the Sun is not as good and auto-focus is a tad slower. Not a negative, but the 24-70 f2.8L is a bit warmer, whereas the 35 f1.4L MarkII is very mildly warm bordering on neutral but with very nice pleasing colors.

After all the testing, I was confident enough to mount this lens on my Canon 6D to shoot at my daughter's Highschool grad a few days ago. All I can say is WOW! Head shoots at 1.4 outdoors are sharp, with good micro contrast, good tonality, and pleasing accurate colors.

Forget about all the lens' technical specs, the processed RAW images just look stunning. In group shots, I can crop in a lot and the image is still sharp with excellent detail resolve. I should mention I only shoot in AI Servo mode and use back-button focus because my hands are not that steady and I do sway a bit even when trying to stand still.

I have an upcoming vacation trip and my usual travel lens is my Canon 24-105 f4.0L is. My wife, after seeing the grad pictures, insists that lens stays home and to bring only the 35 f1.4 MarkII despite the focal length limitations. Who am I to argue:-)

The Canon 35 f1.4L MarkII lens is expensive and I was on the fence for a very long time wondering if I should instead get the less expensive but highly rated Sigma 35 f1.4 Art. I will say I am extremely happy I bought the Canon! The wallet pain goes away once I see the images, and a bonus is that I don't have to deal with potential auto focus issues!
