Leica Camera is excited to bring the next milestone and icon in the company's long history of premium cameras – the new Leica SL2.
Building on the platform that was established with the Leica SL when the trailblazing system was introduced in 2015, the Leica SL2 elevates the full frame mirrorless segment to new heights with improved performance, refined ergonomics and streamlined controls.
- 47 megapixel full frame sensor brings new levels of image quality
- Built-in Body Image Stabilization for steadier shots with all lenses
- 4K recording with Cine Mode for a pro-level video output
- Streamlined menu interface and button layout for easier/faster use
- Improved ergonomics & weather sealed rugged build made in Germany
The Leica SL2 combines a brand new 47 megapixel full frame CMOS sensor with state-of-the-art sensor-based Body Image Stabilization to get the best image and video quality possible with all Leica lenses.
The new Maestro III processor enables fast burst shooting and 4K for the highest quality and flexibility, and the optional Cine Mode speaks the language of cinematographers who require a professional work flow.
The new OLED EVF with 5.76 million dots of resolution guarantees the clearest view and composition through a Leica lens. These new technical achievements paired with a larger 3.2" rear LCD and the essential Leica three-button control layout make the SL2 the most capable and approachable professional system camera.
Powerful 47 MP CMOS Sensor
The newly developed 47 megapixel full frame CMOS sensor – with an ISO range of 50 - 50,000 – gives photographers all the resolution they need while still maintaining high speeds and versatile low-light shooting. The integrated BIS system offers up to 5.5 stops of stabilization with any lens, including adapted Leica lenses never before stabilized, allowing stills and
video to be steadier and helping guarantee sharp images even in low light with slower shutter speeds.
The unprecedented resolution of the SL2’s CMOS image sensor in full-frame format results in an unparalleled level of detail rendition and image quality. Enormous dynamic range, a color depth of 14 bits per RGB channel and a sensitivity of up to ISO 50,000 enable outstanding image quality in all lighting conditions. Even when combined with Leica TL lenses, which are designed for the smaller sensor format of the Leica TL2 and CL, the SL2’s sensor still delivers an excellent image resolution of over 20 megapixels.
New in-body stabilization
Through sensor-shift technology
In a major evolution of the SL, the Leica SL2 features a suspended sensor which adjusts its position in order to quickly and efficiently compensate for camera shake. This in-camera method even makes image stabilization available to lenses that are not equipped with their own.
Additionally, in multishot mode, the tripod-mounted camera can record up to eight consecutive frames, whereby the sensor is shifted in half-pixel increments in between every exposure. This key feature results in images with an incredible quadrupled resolution of around 187 megapixels, leading to an extreme increase in detail resolution.
Maestro III Processor
The new Maestro III processor facilitates a superior operating speed that shines in many aspects of the SL2’s performance. The autofocus is significantly faster and allows for a virtually lag-free shutter release in any shooting situation, which is further complemented by the new Smart AF mode, which autonomously switches between focus priority and shutter release priority. Full-resolution recordings of consecutive images are possible at 10 frames per second with the focal plane shutter, and 20 frames per second with the electronic shutter. Thanks to two UHS-II-compatible SD card slots, raw files can be saved simultaneously in DNG and JPEG format.
Professional film performance
The Leica SL2 is the first full-frame mirrorless camera with a video resolution of up to 5k. With it’s 4k on full-frame and up to 60fps, the SL2 can perform exceptionally demanding video production tasks. Being separated from the photo-modes also means that that important settings such as ISO, shooting assistants, image style settings, are entirely independent of photo mode. Time consuming settings in sub-menus are avoided - meaning that the camera is correctly configured and ready to shoot at all times.
The Leica SL2 is a perfect hybrid platform for both stills and video, now recording 4K across the full sensor. It goes further with 4K video up to 60 fps, a cropped 5K mode, built-in 3.5mm headphone and mic jacks and 10-bit quality direct to card. For pros operating in a high-level work flow, the SL2 can be set to Cine Mode to speak the language of cinematographers. For example, shutter speed becomes shutter angle and ISO becomes ASA.
Made to inspire
The only mirrorless camera designed and crafted in Germany, with an unmatched all metal solid construction and elegant leather wrap to withstand the time and deliver years of photographic pleasure, thanks to the sustainability guaranteed by consistent firmware updates.
Evolved Design for an Iconic Leica Identity
For the SL2, the designers at Leica's design office in Munich looked to the brand's heritage for inspiration. Hearkening back to the Leicaflex SL and Leica R3/R4, the SL-System's forebears, they established a more iconic Leica identity for the SL2. Now built from a main chassis of magnesium and a solid aluminum top, the Leica SL2 marches towards the future while respecting the past and its legacy.
Control and Handling
Designed with photographers, for photographers
A unique user interface, separated for photo and video functions, simple and intuitive to allow the photographer to focus on picture taking and live an unparalleled experience, developed through feedbacks of customers and professional photographers worldwide.
Streamlined Menu Interface and Button Layout
Furthering Leica's mantra of "Das Wesentliche" (The Essentials), the Leica SL2 has a simplified interface and control scheme. The menu functions for Photo and Video are split up with a graphical interface to clearly identify which one you are in and help you navigate. The three-button control layout of the M10, CL & Q2 has now migrated to the SL2 for easier controls that are more approachable while still customizable enough for even seasoned pros.
Robust & Dust- and spraywater resistant (IP54)
Weather sealing for more rugged situations
The SL2’s IP54 certification ensures an elevated weather sealing for more rugged situations, while a new option to turn off noise reduction during long exposures allows for more hands-free shooting. Less worry about the weather and environmental situations means photographers can focus more on getting the shot.
Improved Ergonomics and Weather Sealing
Part of what makes the Leica SL-System so special is its versatility. The new IP54-rated weather sealing of the SL2 ensures this versatile camera can perform in any extreme environment.
Additionally, the ergonomics and contours of the camera have been improved to ensure it can be used for long periods of time without fatigue. Thenew grip material gives a more confident and secure grip that is comfortable to hold and use.
Perfect control in every situation
The improved EyeRes® EVF matches an outstanding 5.76MP panel with an eyepiece built with finest metal and glass and the tightest mechanical and optical tolerances to deliver an unmatched viewing experience, and allow the easiest composition of the image.
New Leica Object Detection AF
Ensures a fast and reliable AF
The new Leica Object Detention AF ensures a fast and reliable AF. In addition to an array of modes and features, including face recognition, the SL2’s high-performance AF system also automatically detects whether a subject is stationary or in motion, and subsequently switches between motion and focus priority. The advanced contrast-detect autofocus system of the Leica SL2 is capable of face detection and body detection, to track moving subjects and maintain pinpoint accuracy. Intelligent-AF (iAF) can be used to focus on still subjects and begin tracking them as soon as they move. The focusing settings can also be fine-tuned by the user to adjust the behavior and tolerances for tracking.
Users now have the option of turning off Long Exposure Noise Reduction in the menu of the Leica SL2, allowing photographers who capture long exposures to work quicker and more
Long Exposures in Less Time
conveniently. Capture detail in even the darkest scenes with a maximum shutter time of 30 minutes.
Leica FOTOS 2.0
The Leica SL2 will arrive in an ecosystem already established with lenses, adapters, and accessories. Coinciding with its release and furthering its capabilities is the Leica FOTOS 2.0 app for iOS and Android. The existing free app will now be accompanied by a new Leica FOTOS Pro version on a subscription basis for $49.99 per year. Leica FOTOS Pro will also be available for iPads.
Also vital to the system is tethered shooting for studio photographers. The SL2 uses a USB-C port that can pull triple-duty for charging, data transfer and tethering. There will be new versions of the Leica Image Shuttle and Adobe Lightroom Leica Tether Plugin for both Windows and Mac.
