The first in the α7R series to feature a fully stacked Exmor RS image sensor, the α7R VI delivers enhanced image quality with readout speeds up to 5.6x faster. BIONZ XR2 with integrated AI processing unit

The BIONZ XR2 engine with an integrated AI processing unit delivers dramatic improvements in image and sound quality, power management, and responsiveness. Expansive creative potential

The fully stacked Exmor RS image sensor delivers class-leading 66.8 MP resolution and superb image quality for landscapes, portraits, wildlife, and more. Shadow noise is minimized in high-dynamic-range landscapes, and portraits are captured with realistic skin tones.

Up to 16-stop dynamic range

Up to 16 stops of dynamic range at low sensitivities supports HDR processing. Outstanding resolution and high sensitivity capture stunning imagery throughout the ISO 100–32000 range. Noise in night scenes is also reduced.

Stable, accurate auto white balance

The Visible Light + IR Sensor works with deep learning-based illumination estimation to achieve stable, accurate auto white balance under any lighting. Together, they enable natural colour reproduction in a wide variety of scenes.

Lifelike rendering of wide dynamic range scenes

The updated D-Range Optimizer (DRO) balances bright highlights and dark shadows and offers a wider range of strength settings, up to Lv8. At higher levels, DRO lifts shadow areas in strong backlight, delivering more natural-looking portrait shots.

Up to 8.5-step central and 7.0-step peripheral stabilization

Superb stabilization performance maximizes resolution, preventing degradation due to blur. Stabilization is even more effective with compatible lenses, and telephoto lens shake is also effectively suppressed.

Upgraded format options with lightweight RAW

A [Compressed (HQ)] RAW format has been added to the existing format, providing lightweight RAW files that enable continuous shooting while maintaining high image quality.

Three composite RAW modes

[Pixel Shift Multi] mode creates composites with extremely high resolution, [NR Shooting] produces low-noise images, and [Shooting for HDR] captures images with a wide dynamic range.

Extended RAW processing uses deep learning for enhanced quality

Extended RAW offers two image-enhancing functions: [Extended Hi-Res], which boosts the pixel count of captured images by a factor of four to approximately 270 MP, and [Extended NR] for high noise reduction with full resolution.

Enhanced Speed and Tracking

Blackout-free continuous shooting at up to 30fps with full AF/AE

Shoot bursts at up to 30fps at full 66.8 MP resolution, with AF/AE tracking and no viewfinder blackout. Up to 60 AF/AE calculations per second effortlessly track even complex subject movement. Plus, with the upgraded BIONZ XR2 processing engine and CFexpress Type A card support, capture up to 215 JPG and 65 Compressed (HQ) RAW images continuously.

Pre-Capture for key moments prior to shutter release

Capture the decisive moment—even after it happens. Half-press the shutter button to set focus, then fully press to record a burst of images from 0.03 to 1 second after the initial half-press.

Temporarily boost speed while shooting bursts

During continuous burst shooting, press an assigned custom button to change the shooting speed—for example, from 10fps to 30fps—when the key moment approaches. This feature can be used even while shooting single frames.

Real-time Recognition AF+ for more tenacious tracking

The α7R VI utilizes the latest human pose estimation technology for improved recognition and tracking. It accurately maintains focus on the desired subject in a group or when a distant subject is small in the frame, even when the subject is moving.

Improved subject recognition performance

Recognition of distant animals and birds has been significantly improved. Choose from Human, Animal, Bird, Insect, Car/Train, or Airplane mode, or let Auto detect the subject type. Even when Subject Recognition is turned off, Sony’s original algorithm processes multiple data points for reliable tracking.

Approx. 94% AF coverage for extra framing freedom

Fast readout and processing deliver notably improved AF. 759 phase detection points cover about 94% of the image area for precise focusing for shooting stills, even when the subject is small in the frame.

Precise AF in low light

Enjoy reliable AF at light levels as low as EV-6, or EV-11 with Bright Monitoring enabled. The AF can also be limited to long-distance ranges for shooting low-light distant scenes.

Flexible focus area settings

Choose from XL, L, M, S, and XS spot focus area sizes, or create a custom vertical focus area. The XS setting assists focusing on the subject when objects are in the foreground.

Temporarily switch from AF to MF with Full Time DMF

When shooting stills with AF, rotating the lens’s focus ring temporarily switches to manual focus for fine-tuning or shifting the focus to the desired subject.

Optimum focus on difficult subjects with Focus Bracketing

Up to 299 images are automatically shot at specified focus increments. The best focus can then be selected, or the images can be composited in post-production for extreme depth of field.

Flicker-free images in artificial light

Anti-flicker Shooting prevents exposure and colour variations caused by artificial lighting, and High-frequency Flicker-free Shooting adjusts the shutter speed for best results in LED-lit settings.

Full-frame 4K 60p video without cropping

Equipped with an upgraded image sensor and processing engine, the α7R VI is capable of 4K (QFHD: 3840 x 2160) 60p and high frame rate 4K 120p recording without cropping. 4:2:2 colour sampling and 10-bit depth further support high video quality.

8K movies for spectacular resolution

8K 30p movies can be recorded in XAVC HS format with 8.2K oversampling offering spectacular resolution. This is further enhanced by precision AF performance, along with natural gradations and colours. 8K also supports 4:2:2 10-bit recording.

Dual Gain Shooting for enhanced editing flexibility

Leveraging the sensor’s tonal range, Dual Gain Shooting delivers wider latitude with detailed shadows, low noise, and smooth video gradations for enhanced editing flexibility.

S-Log3 supports post-production workflows

The S-Log3 gamma curve maintains smooth gradations for more effective post processing. S-Gamut3 and S-Gamut3.Cine colour spaces are supported, and S-Cinetone and imported user LUTs offer a finished look without grading.

In-camera audio processing

Whether recording via the internal or an external microphone, Audio Noise Reduction—with Noise Cut and Wind Noise Reduction modes—uses digital processing to reduce background, wind, and lens noise.

32 bit float audio recording for editing flexibility

The optional XLR-A4 XLR Adaptor enables 96 kHz/32 bit float audio recording. This delivers a wide dynamic range via the Multi Interface (MI) Shoe which supports a digital audio interface. This high-quality audio offers greater flexibility during editing.

Real-time Recognition AF+ lets you focus on composition

Enhanced stabilization

An enhanced developed stabilization unit expands the roll-direction compensation range by up to 2x, effectively reducing handheld roll shake. Select Dynamic active Mode for 30% stronger compensation and steadier handheld video.

Breathing compensation for smooth movie imagery

Sony’s original Clear Image Zoom technology stabilizes the angle of view when focusing, minimizing breathing. Compensation can also be applied via the Catalyst Browse and Catalyst Prepare applications or the Catalyst Prepare Plugin during post-production.

Bright high-resolution wide-gamut electronic viewfinder

Retaining the class-leading 9.44-million-dot resolution of its predecessor, the α7R VI upgrades to an OLED electronic viewfinder with a DCI-P3-equivalent colour gamut, 10-bit depth, and up to 3x the luminance. Enjoy clear, smooth viewing even in bright outdoor conditions or when shooting HLG stills.

4-axis multi-angle monitor

Sony’s 4-axis multi-angle monitor swings up, down, and sideways, and is easily adjustable for the optimum viewing angle. The 3.2-type 2.1 million dot LCD panel is touch sensitive and has a DCI-P3-equivalent colour gamut, displaying clear, natural images.

Illuminated rear-panel buttons

Illuminated rear-panel buttons allow easy status checks and smooth operation even in very dark conditions. Button illumination can be turned on via the top-panel Backlight button.

Front-panel tally lamp clearly shows recording status

Shoot with confidence that the action is being recorded—a tally lamp on the front of the camera clearly indicates current recording status, helping to prevent operational errors.

Easy-to-use cable clamper

With an enhanced design, a cable clamper provides a secure hold while being easier to use. Cables can easily be secured or removed while the clamper is attached to the camera body.

High-capacity NP-SA100 Rechargeable Battery Pack included

An upgraded high-capacity 2670 mAh battery supplies power for up to 600/710 stills (viewfinder/monitor). Advanced power management greatly improves battery life, and battery health information is provided.

USB Power Delivery (PD) compatible BC-SAD1 quick charger

The supplied BC-SAD1 charges two NP-SA100 batteries to full in about 115 minutes, and a single battery to 80% in just 55 minutes. Vertical battery loading saves space, and status LEDs are provided.

Optional DC-C2 DC Coupler for alternate power source

The optional DC-C2 DC Coupler lets you directly power the camera from a USB Power Delivery (PD) source for extended operation, while keeping the camera’s USB terminal free.

Optional VG-C6 Vertical Grip for fatigue-free shooting

The optional VG-C6 Vertical Grip provides consistent hold and control access whether shooting horizontally or vertically. Remaining battery level is clearly displayed on the camera’s monitor.

Dual CFexpress Type A memory card slots

Slots 1 and 2 support CFexpress Type A and SDXC/SDHC UHS-II/UHS-I media for fast high-capacity shooting. Storage modes include simultaneous recording, saving JPEG/HEIF and RAW to separate cards, and more.

Playback filtering and groups

Find specific shots easily by filtering images by date, folder, still/movie, rating, and more. The Group Display function displays only the first image of groups of images shot in bursts.

Faster, more stable Wi-Fi

Built-in wireless LAN supports Wi-Fi 802.11ax with 2x2 MIMO providing faster, more stable high-speed wireless communication on the 6, 5, and 2.4 GHz bands. Wireless tethering on location and delivery via FTP are fast, reliable, and stress-free.

Easy live streaming

4K 30p video can be live streamed to a PC via USB (UVC/UAC) or distributed via wired or wireless LAN, while being simultaneously saved to a memory card. RTMP/RTMPS/SRT protocols are supported.

Shooting info display supports vertical orientation

Shooting information display on the rear monitor automatically switches to match camera orientation when shooting stills and movies.

Creators’ App

This app allows remote control of the camera through a smartphone, in addition to easy transfer and storage of captured images. It also enables direct uploading to Sony’s Creators’ Cloud or Adobe Lightroom.

Imaging Edge Desktop

This versatile computer application supports tethered shooting via wired USB, Wi-Fi, or LAN. It can also composite images from any of the camera’s three composite modes and process Extended RAW images.

Greater accessibility for all users

Designed for easier use by everyone, the α7R VI comes with a menu magnifier and Screen Reader that reads most menu screen text aloud. It also offers several improvements over its predecessor, such as the [Mode Dial Control Set] function, which enables easy selection of shooting modes via the menu, and a lens mount index that is easily to locate by touch.

Reduced environmental stress

Sony’s Road to Zero plan aims at a zero environmental footprint by 2050. Our durable, high-quality recycled plastic material SORPLAS™ is used as much as possible to reduce stress on the environment without compromising performance. More than 22% of this product is made of recycled plastic, including SORPLAS. Additionally, Sony Group manufacturing facilities run on 100% renewable energy.

Recyclable non-plastic packaging materials

We are working towards the use of non-plastic packaging materials that provide ample protection against shock and impact. We ship the α7R VI in a plastic-free package made of an Original Blended Material that can be recycled as paper. We also use plant-based non-woven fabrics product bags to further reduce the plastic use and minimize environmental stress.
